St. Charles man killed in alleged drunk motorcycle crash

A St. Charles man was killed after crashing his motorcycle into a car while allegedly driving while drunk Friday night in west suburban Campton Hills, police said.

The accident happened at 41W0134 Route 64 at 8:04 p.m., according to a Campton Hills police release.
Michael S. Smith, 40, of the 200 block of Sunbury Drive in St. Charles, was killed in the crash. Smith’s wife, a passenger on his motorcycle, was taken to an area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, the release said.

Smith was riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle east on Route 64 when he left the road on the south shoulder, corrected to come back onto the road and hit the rear passenger bumper of a car traveling in the same direction, the release said.

According to witnesses and preliminary investigation at the scene, a companion motorcycle was traveling with Smith but left the scene prior to police arrival.

Witnesses also told police the motorcycles were traveling at a high rate of speed and were weaving in and out of traffic prior to the crash.

Smith was taken to Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva where he was pronounced dead at 9:07 p.m. Preliminary blood tests at the hospital found Smith was over the legal limit for alcohol and the presence of cannabis was detected, the release said.

The driver and passenger of the car involved in the crash were not injured and did not require hospitalization.
Police said no charges have been filed in the crash but it remains under investigation.

Police are also searching for the other motorcyclist for information about the crash. Anyone with information is asked to call police at (630) 584-033.
