Truck driver in hiring fraud case busted for DUI

April 10, 2009

A politically connected city truck driver who testified in a recent City Hall corruption trial has been arrested on a charge of DUI, city officials acknowledged Friday.

The checkered driving history of Denise Alcantar figured prominently in the federal trial that resulted in the hiring fraud conviction last month of Mayor Richard Daley’s former Streets and Sanitation commissioner, Al Sanchez.

Alcantar has been at fault in four on-the-job accidents, including a 2003 crash in which she was behind the wheel as her garbage truck pinned a co-worker against a telephone pole. The co-worker was seriously injured and died last year.

Streets and Sanitation spokesman Matt Smith said the department had no details and was unaware of the April 2 arrest until contacted by the Tribune earlier this week.

Alcantar reported to work the day after her arrest but then took an indefinite, unpaid leave, Smith said. He added that under the law, the city could not “take any adverse employment action” against Alcantar based on her arrest.

On the witness stand in Sanchez’s trial, Alcantar said she got her job in 2002 after filling out an application at a meeting of the pro-Daley Hispanic Democratic Organization. She was hired despite having no experience as a truck driver.

Alcantar’s driving record and political ties were first detailed in a 2006 Tribune investigation. The article led federal investigators to subpoena Alcantar.
