Possible DUI connection in fatal River Grove crash
River Grove police are considering DUI charges in a Sunday vehicle crash that resulted in the death of a 54-year-old Norridge man, authorities say.
The suspect, a 24-year-old male from Melrose Park, is in custody and cooperating, said River Grove Police Chief Rodger Loni. He has not been officially charged.
At 10:14 p.m. Sunday, an Elmwood Park officer flagged down the suspect’s Ford Explorer, which was headed westbound on Grand Avenue, Loni said. The vehicle appeared to be slowing down before it ran a red stoplight at a high rate of speed, he said, crossing Thatcher Avenue and hitting a southbound Volkswagen Beetle on the passenger side.
The Volkswagen driver, Henry Manso, was killed instantly, Loni said. He was pronounced dead at 10:41 p.m. at Loyola Hospital in Maywood from internal injuries.
Loni said the suspect had a blood alcohol level of .16, twice the legal limit in Illinois, and has given a taped oral statement. The suspect and his male passenger suffered no injuries, he said.
Loni said that the suspect had an active Cook County warrant for failure to appear for a 2009 aggravated DUI charge. The suspect’s name has not been released pending charges.
