Drunk driver strikes construction worker on Bishop Ford
An intoxicated driver struck a construction worker, pinning the worker between two vehicles, early Friday on the Bishop Ford Freeway near south suburban Dolton, according to Illinois State Police.
The driver of the offending vehicle and the construction worker were both taken to area hospitals for injuries.
A driver of a 1998 Cadillac was headed south on the Bishop Ford Freeway (I-94) about 4:15 a.m. when he entered a protected work zone and struck the worker causing him to be pinned against his vehicle and a construction van, said ISP Chicago Master Sgt. Todd Borisy.
According to preliminary information the worker was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with two broken legs. The driver suffered head injuries, and was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey.
Borisy said incident happened in a work zone where the construction worker was clearly visible, and traffic cones were on the roadway, cautioning drivers of roadwork.
The drunken driver did not attempt to flee the scene following the accident, Borisy said. There were no passengers inside the vehicle, and no other workers were injured.
No charges have been filed against the driver early Friday, but he could be charged with violating Scott’s Law, a law designed to protect roadside workers and other personnel. The driver could have his license suspended and face further penalties, Borisy said.
