Partially blind, allegedly DUI driver arrested
SOUTH HAVEN, Ind. (STNG) — A partially blind and allegedly DUI driver crashed twice into the same vehicle at a northwest Indiana gas station Sunday, nearly hitting a gas pump.
Police were on their way to look for a white van reportedly seen swerving on McCool Road, north of U.S. Route 6 in South Haven, Ind., when Ryan Kelly, 32, of Portage, pulled his white 1995 Chevrolet Astro van into the gas station at that intersection about 9:15 p.m.
As he got back into his vehicle after leaving the store, several witnesses told police, he backed the van into a parked gray Volkswagen. He got out and saw there was no damage, got back in his van, and again backed into the Volkswagen, this time as it was being driven.
Kelly also hit the concrete barrier next to a fuel pump, according to the police report.
Police said Kelly was driving with a valid learner’s permit, although he is blind in one eye. He was arrested and charged with felony drunken driving, because he had a prior conviction.
