Recent High-Profile Arrests Highlight DUI Crackdown – Chicago DUI Lawyers Examine
Chicago DUI attorneys react as two high-profile DUI cases make their way into the news this month.
The first case involves Chicago Alderman Sharon Dixon of the 24th Ward. Dixon was arrested earlier this month by Chicago Police and charged with DUI. Dixon was arrested in the 6900 block of North Sheridan Road at about 1:25 a.m., where police were controlling traffic in connection with an apartment fire. Dixon said that she was returning from a friend’s house in Evanston when she was stopped.
Also this month, Cook County Judge Sheila McGinnis was sentenced to 18 months of supervision and fined $1,000 after she pleaded guilty to DUI. The Judge was arrested in May of last year when she crashed her SUV into the back of a minivan in Tinley Park. The judge could have been sentenced to a year in jail.
What do both of these incidents tell us?
First of all, it is clear that the DUI crackdown in Chicago is continuing. DUI arrests are up, and, as a result, more people than ever are losing their driver’s licenses and facing lengthy jail sentences. Even first time DUI charges can carry a prison sentence.
Secondly, and more importantly, these arrests show that the police and prosecutors are not playing favorites when it comes to whom is being arrested or sentenced for DUI. If a sitting Cook County Judge can be sentenced in a DUI case, what do you think your chances are if you are arrested for DUI in Chicago?
This is why, more than ever, it is important to have good Chicago DUI attorneys protecting your rights.
