Chicago DUI Fines Should Increase: State Rep Boland

Our Chicago DUI Lawyers continue our examination of the real reason for drunk driving arrests; money.  Check out the suggestion by State Rep Mike Boland.

Here’s one way we can pay for more city police officers

May 4, 2010

Two of my legislative colleagues have drawn needed attention to the violent crime problem in Chicago. Most editorial comments, columnists and law enforcement professionals feel that the best answer is more police.

The very visibility of police officers on the streets would not only result in prevention of crime but give a feeling of security to the vast majority of law-abiding inhabitants of high-crime areas.

Obviously, the question is how in this time of fiscal crisis do we pay for more police for a city or cities when the governor has threatened to lay off hundreds of State Police officers? I would suggest adding a $100 fee to all DUI violations and/or putting lottery machines in Illinois rest areas, as the state of Florida has done.

The first job of government at all levels is providing a safe environment to work and live.

Mike Boland,

state representative,

71st District

Wait.  Let me see if I have this right.  Increase DUI fines so you can make more money, so you can hire more police, so you can have more DUI arrests, so you can make more money…..

Again, no mention of the increased safety the extra $100 of DUI fines would provide.
