DUI charges filed in Ford City mall crash

A Berwyn man who police said was driving on a revoked license for drunken driving has been charged with felony DUI in connection with a crash Sunday outside Ford City mall that sent three children in his vehicle to the hospital.

Manuel Bahena, 35, of the 3600 block of South Kenilworth in the near western suburb, was also charged with, among other things, reckless driving, failure to reduce speed, causing an accident while drunk that caused bodily harm and driving on a revoked license while drunk.

He is scheduled to appear in bond court later today.

One of the children, a 7-year-old, suffered the most serious injuries, with a fractured back and other broken bones, police said. The other children, ages 9 and 10, were not as seriously hurt.

Earlier, police said the driver of the vehicle had a blood-alcohol level more than three times the legal limit of 0.08 percent. He suffered only minor injuries in the crash.

The crash happened about 2:20 p.m. Sunday near 76th Street and Cicero Avenue, outside the mall.

The vehicle carrying the three children was headed south on Cicero when it crossed over into the northbound lanes and hit the other vehicle, police said. The southbound vehicle then struck a fixed object, possibly a sign post, after colliding with the northbound vehicle.
